"President Kikwete said that burning the tusks would send a signal to poachers that the country was now serious over the slaughtering of its elephants. This means that Tanzania has now joined other countries like Kenya, Japan , France and the United States that have for long supported destroying ivory stockpiles instead of putting them up for sale through auctions." |
Meet the Artist: Robert Aswani
Elephant Highway is proud to support local artists who work and live in regions of the globe where elephant poaching is prevalent. By supporting these men and women, we are directly helping the economies of isolated villages where many impoverished people resort to poaching as a means of getting money. We also do our best to educate the artists that we work with about the important role elephants play in the ecosystems that they live in. Robert Aswani was born in western Kenya in 1971, and he specializes in using acrylic highlighted by watercolor ink.
In the spring, Elephant Highway will be releasing a special edition t-shirt featuring one of Robert Aswani's beautiful paintings of elephants. We are proud to be able to promote Robert's beautiful artwork. As with all Elephant Highway products, 100% of the profits from the sale of this shirt will go to organizations that work in the field to protect elephants from poachers. |
